Surf the Kananaskis River: What Is the Kananaskis Surf Trip with Canadian Rockies Rafting?

If you thought surfing was only for oceans, think again. Nestled in the heart of Alberta’s wild mountain landscapes, the Kananaskis Surf Trip offered by Canadian Rockies Rafting delivers a truly unique whitewater experience—and no passport to Hawaii required.

Whether you’re a thrill-seeker looking for your next adrenaline fix or you’re eager for a new experience, ready to do something new, this trip promises unforgettable fun on the water in one of Canada’s most scenic areas.

What Exactly Is the Kananaskis Surf Trip?

Unlike traditional whitewater rafting trips that focus on navigating a river downstream from point A to B, the Kananaskis Surf Trip is all about playing in the waves.  Think of it as a river rodeo: first, you punch through the rapid. Second, you turn around and paddle back up the river.  Third, with precision skills from your guide, you catch the sweet point of the flow.  This is where you aim to surf and ride the current for as long as you can.  The more vertical your raft gets, the sweeter the surf.

It’s a powerful blend of river dynamics, teamwork, and sheer fun.

Who is the Kananaskis Surf Trip For?

This trip is perfect for:

  • Adventure-seekers who want a little something more than a classic whitewater rafting experience.
  • Returning rafters looking for a fresh way to enjoy the river.
  • First-timers, there’s no experience necessary, but one should be comfortable in water.

No matter what type of Whitewater Rafting Tour you do, everyone must be comfortable getting wet—because you will.

What to Expect on the Kananaskis Surf Trip

1. Meet Your Guides
You’ll start at Canadian Rockies Rafting’s River base. After check-in, you’ll gear up with wetsuits, helmets, river booties, and life jackets.

2. Safety First
After you’re geared up, you’ll go through a thorough safety briefing. This goes over different scenarios that can happen out on the water and if something does happen, you will know what to do. Our expert guides are not only safety pros—they’re storytellers, instructors, and stoke-bringers all in one.

3. Surf Time!
Let’s get on the water.  After a short 5-10min drive to the Put In, you’ll get paired with a guide and the adventure begins.  With teamwork, you’ll paddle into position and feel the raw power of the river as you surf the waves—hanging on for as long as you can before washing out (and probably laughing and screaming with excitement the whole time).

4. Repeat and Play
You’ll likely try several surf attempts, learning and improving with each ride. Some runs will stick longer than others, and wiping out is just part of the fun.

5. Mountain Vibes All Around
All of this takes place in the breathtaking setting of the Kananaskis River, surrounded by towering peaks, dense forests, and crystal-clear water. Even when you’re not surfing, you’ll be soaking in some of the most beautiful views the Canadian Rocky Mountains have to offer.

Why You Should Try It

The Kananaskis Surf Trip is about more than just paddling—it’s about embracing the wild, challenging yourself in a playful way, and experiencing the Canadian Rockies from a completely new angle. Whether you’re a local Albertan or visiting from afar, this is a river adventure you’ll be talking about long after you dry off.
