Fall Adventures for Rafters Who Can’t Sit Still

Kananaskis Country in the fall

Your Off-Season Adventure Guide in Canmore, Banff & Kananaskis

Just because the rafts are out of the river after September 14, 2025 doesn’t mean the adventure has to stop.

At Canadian Rockies Rafting, we know that for many of our guests and guides, sitting still isn’t an option. You live for movement, fresh air, and the rush of trying something new. So if you’re feeling that post-rafting-season itch for adrenaline, connection, or just more time in the wild, we’ve got you covered.

Here are our top fall adventures for those who crave action long after the last rapid is run.

1. Hike

Larch Hike in Kananaskis Country

Fall in the Rocky Mountains means larch season—a magical window in late September when the alpine trees turn a vibrant golden-yellow. Don’t miss:

  • Larch Valley (Lake Louise) – One of the most iconic fall hikes in the area. Get there early to beat the crowds.
  • Ptarmigan Cirque (Kananaskis) – Short, stunning, and bursting with colour.
  • East End of Rundle (Canmore) – A steep climb with a serious view payoff for the active adventurer.

Pro tip: Bring layers—the weather changes fast up there!

2. Mountain Biking in Kananaskis or Canmore

If you love the energy of paddling, mountain biking is your fall fix.

  • Canmore Nordic Centre – A world-class trail network just minutes from downtown Canmore.
  • Kananaskis Trail System – Where you’re around Barrier Lake, Kananaskis Village or deeper into Kananaskis Country in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, the trails are flowy descents with scenic lake views.  Keep in mind not all trails are multi purpose, please check trail reports before you venture out.
  • High Rockies Trail – A multi-day challenge for the hardcore riders among us.

Most trails stay open well into October unless early snow hits.

3. Go Underground with Canmore Cave Tours

Looking for something thrilling and weatherproof? Head underground with Canmore Cave Tours at Rat’s Nest Cave—open year-round and perfect for fall explorers.

  • Crawl, climb, and squeeze your way through ancient limestone formations
  • Explore natural caverns that few people ever get to see
  • Great for adventurers who want a guided, hands-on experience without needing ropes or climbing skills

It’s one of the most unique and immersive ways to experience the Rocky Mountains—especially when the weather cools down up top.

4. Explore Hidden Waterfalls & Canyons

Just because the river’s calm doesn’t mean you have to be. Go chase waterfalls and dramatic canyons:

  • Johnston Canyon (Banff) – An easy to follow trail along the canyon walls.  There are fewer tourists in fall so you won’t have to wait in line to see the power of the waterfalls.
  • Troll Falls (Kananaskis) – A family-friendly favourite, with great photo ops.
  • Heart Creek Trail – Easy, beautiful, and often overlooked.

5. View Wildlife

September and October are prime time to spot elk, sheep, and even the occasional bear preparing for hibernation. You don’t need to go far—often the wildlife comes to you.

  • Lake Minnewanka Loop (Banff) – Frequent elk and sheep sightings.
  • Spray Lakes Road (Kananaskis) – Watch for moose near the water’s edge.

Reminder: Respect wildlife distance guidelines—especially during rutting season!

6. Cozy Up After the Adventure

Fall isn’t just about adrenaline—it’s also about recovery. After a hike or cave tour, grab something warm and local:

  • Beamers Coffee Bar (Canmore) – A local favourite for hearty soups, espresso, and chill mountain-town vibes
  • Banff Upper Hot Springs (Banff) – Soak in the mineral-rich hot springs with breathtaking mountain views
  • Kananaskis Nordic Spa – Hot pools, saunas, cold plunge with mountain views = well-earned bliss
