10 Must-Dos in Canmore & Banff This Labour Day Weekend

Rafting the Horseshoe Canyon with Canadian Rockies Rafting

Labour Day weekend might mark the unofficial end of summer, but here in the Canadian Rockies, the adventure is far from over.

With warm days, cooler evenings and plenty of summer activities still running, the September long weekend is a great time to squeeze in one more mountain getaway. Whether you’re coming from Calgary for the day, spending the weekend in Canmore or making a trip to Banff, there’s no shortage of ways to make the most of those extra days off.

One thing to keep in mind: Labour Day weekend is a busy one in the Rockies. If there’s an activity you really want to do, don’t wait until you arrive to make your plans.

Here are 10 must-dos in Canmore and Banff this Labour Day weekend.

1. Get on the River for a Whitewater Rafting Adventure

Summer isn’t over yet!

Labour Day weekend is one of your last chances of the season to experience the Canadian Rockies from the river. Paddle through exciting rapids, take in incredible mountain scenery and spend a few hours doing something a little more memorable than another afternoon on a patio.

Canadian Rockies Rafting offers different whitewater experiences depending on how adventurous you want to get.

Take on the Horseshoe Canyon Tour for bigger whitewater, Class II–IV rapids and two optional cliff jumps, or head out on the Kananaskis Whitewater Tour for a fun, splashy adventure that’s great for first-time rafters and families. Want something that falls in the middle? Check out Kananaskis Xtreme Tour. It’s all about playing in the whitewater, not just punching through it.

Labour Day Tip: Long weekends can fill up quickly. If rafting is on your weekend list, make this one of the activities you book before you arrive.

2. Experience the Canmore Highland Games

If you’re in Canmore over Labour Day weekend, this one needs to be on the list.

The Canmore Highland Games bring Scottish tradition to the heart of the Rockies with piping and drumming, Highland dancing, heavy sports, food, entertainment and plenty of tartan.

It’s one of Canmore’s signature annual events and adds something completely different to a weekend of mountain adventures.

Pair a morning or afternoon at the Highland Games with some time exploring downtown Canmore and you’ve got a pretty great long-weekend day.

3. Hit the Trails

It wouldn’t be a weekend in the Canadian Rockies without getting out for a hike.

Canmore, Banff and Kananaskis offer everything from easy walks to challenging mountain hikes, so you don’t have to dedicate your entire day to the trail unless you want to.

For a walk that is more relaxed and easy to fit in amongst other plans, opt for a scenic walk along the Bow River via the Engine Bridge Trail in Canmore. If you’re after a bigger adventure, head into Kananaskis and make a day of it.

Whatever trail you choose, check current trail conditions before heading out and always be prepared for quickly changing mountain weather.

4. See the Rockies From a Helicopter

You’ve seen the mountains from the road. Now see them from above.

A helicopter sightseeing tour gives you an entirely different perspective of the Canadian Rockies, flying over peaks, valleys, glaciers and landscapes you simply can’t experience from the ground.

Better yet, it’s an adventure that doesn’t take up your entire day, making it easy to combine with rafting, hiking, exploring downtown Canmore or another activity.

This is another experience we’d recommend reserving ahead of time over a long weekend.

5. Head Underground at Rat’s Nest Cave

Looking for something completely different?

Just outside Canmore, Rat’s Nest Cave takes the adventure underground. Guided cave tours let you crawl, climb and explore beneath Grotto Mountain through a wild cave system that has remained largely untouched.

There are no paved paths or handrails down there. This is a real caving experience and a pretty memorable way to spend part of your Labour Day weekend.

If caving is something of interest, we’d recommend booking in advance for this adventure too.

Still Planning Your Weekend?

If your Labour Day plans are starting to fill up, choose your must-do adventure first and build the rest of your weekend around it.

If Whitewater Rafting makes the list, reserve your trip ahead of time and then leave yourself plenty of room for hiking, sightseeing, the Highland Games and exploring Canmore.

6. Spend Some Time in Downtown Canmore

Not every minute needs to be adrenaline filled.

Leave yourself a few hours to wander downtown Canmore, grab a coffee, check out the local shops and galleries, find a patio or stop for something sweet.

One of the best parts about staying in Canmore is how easy it is to mix bigger adventures with a relaxed afternoon or evening downtown.

After a morning on the river or the trails, clean up and head into town for dinner. You’ve earned it.

7. Explore the Rockies on Horseback

Trade your hiking boots for a saddle and experience the mountains from a different perspective.

A horseback ride is a great way to slow things down while still getting outside and exploring the landscape. With mountain views, forest trails and wide-open spaces, it’s a classic Rocky Mountain experience that works especially well as a contrast to a faster-paced adventure like rafting.

If this one is high on your list, check availability and book ahead rather than leaving it until the weekend.

If both horseback trail riding and rafting make your list, check out the Surf and Saddle package.  An awesome day of adventure that includes a cowboy style lunch.

8. Spend a Day Exploring Banff

You can’t come all this way without making a trip into Banff.

Walk Banff Avenue, check out Bow Falls, take in the view from Surprise Corner or head toward Lake Minnewanka for some sightseeing.

Just remember that Labour Day weekend is busy. Parking at popular locations can be limited, so look into transit and shuttle options and give yourself more time than you think you’ll need.

9. Catch a Rocky Mountain Sunset

After a full day of adventures, find somewhere to slow down and watch the sun disappear behind the mountains.

The great thing about this one? No reservations required.

Head toward the Bow River, find a viewpoint or simply look up while you’re walking back from dinner. September evenings in the Rockies can be beautiful, and sometimes the unplanned moments end up being the ones you remember most.

10. Build Your Perfect Labour Day Adventure Day

Can’t decide what to do? Combine a few favourites.

Whitewater Rafting → Canmore Highland Games → Stroll around Engine Bridge to catch the sunset

Highland Games → Lunch in Canmore → Whitewater Rafting → Dinner and drinks downtown

You don’t need to do everything. Pick a couple of experiences you’re excited about, book the ones that require reservations and leave a little room for spontaneity.

One More Weekend. Make It Count.

Labour Day weekend might be the unofficial end of summer, but that doesn’t mean you have to be ready for summer to end.

Get outside. Try something new. Explore somewhere you haven’t been. Catch the Highland Games. Spend the day in Banff. If you haven’t made it onto the river yet this summer, now is the time.

There are only so many summer weekends in the Canadian Rockies.

Make this one count.
